First, though: this isn't a new issue globally. It was first identified in Australia in late November 2025, where multiple wind farms confirmed chrysotile in brake pads supplied by Chinese manufacturer 3S Industry, and it's been actively investigated and remediated there ever since. The UK discovery almost certainly comes from that ongoing global audit rather than being an independent finding. The Sunday Times story is new; the problem, and the industry response to it, are not.


The story is real — just not quite the story being told

Chrysotile — white asbestos, banned in the UK since 1999 — has been found in brake components inside the service lifts used by maintenance crews in around 1,000 UK wind turbines. The parts came from third-party Chinese suppliers. No one knew, no one approved it, and a clean-up is now under way. The HSE has confirmed no airborne fibres have been detected and no workers have been harmed.

So far so legitimate. But "packed with white asbestos" — the framing doing the rounds — isn't what the story says. The asbestos is in small, sealed, non-friable (meaning the fibres aren't loose) brake housings inside a locked structure that members of the public never enter. Those 1,000 turbines, over their operational lifetimes, will displace enough fossil fuel combustion to avert hundreds of premature deaths from particulate matter, NOx, and SO₂ — the pollutants that come out of exhausts and smokestacks. The asbestos in their lift brakes — encapsulated, a few kilograms across the entire fleet, currently being replaced — has harmed no one.

Meanwhile the six million tonnes in UK schools and hospitals are still there, and the benzene is still at the forecourt. It would be interesting to know when the outrage extends to those.
